The male has dark blue or silver-blue wings with a black border. The female's wings are a duller blue that fades to a brownish or grayish color towards the edges of its wings. The female's wings are bordered with a row of dark spots with orange crescents. The Karner Blue is a subspecies of the small blue butterfly, and is found in a limited area in the United States. These are very small creatures, primarily seen hovering around the wild lupine plant fields and has been declared as endangered (‘At Risk G3’) by NatureServe. The Karner blue's lifecycle depends completely on one plant, the wild lupine.
